Building Confidence and Self-Esteem with Miss Joni

Building Confidence in our children and youth isn't really that hard, I think we need to listen and talk with them. I have talked to classrooms and small groups often about our character Self-esteem Elephant and ask the children what it is that they like about who they are. And, as you might imagine they say they like their new bike, or going to the park and I then ask them, while those are nice things, but, "What do you like about YOU?" Many times I must prompt them with more questions, "Do you like to read, are you good at it?" "Are you a good friend?" "Are you good at art?" and so on and then they stop to think about this and come back with wonderful answers about what they like about themself!

At a Farmers Market in Hendersonville a few years back this mom shared her daughters reaction to her water bottle and coloring page sparking a conversation about self-esteem because her daughter asked her, "What does that mean, I LIKE ME?" Mom was also a Girl Scout Leader and I got to share resources with her to use in her group activities.

One does not need to set time aside to talk with their children, start conversations while you're driving in the car, on your way to a neighbors house, walking through the park, etc. kids open up in conversations when we ask them. Stop by online and meet our character Self-Esteem Elephant and introduce the character, talk about what the trait means, read books, do activities and have conversations, you will learn so much about your child and your child will learn so much about who they are, too!
