Memphis teacher surprised with $1,000 check for library (actionnews5.com) — A Memphis-Shelby County Schools educator just received a $1,000 surprise to boost her school library, and the money will go straight into supplies and resources for students. Middle College High School teacher-librarian Diana Howard plans to add arts, crafts, and equipment, while locals are encouraged to nominate other standout teachers for future support through the Extra Yard for Teachers program.
   

2. City Council Seeks Face-to-Face Answers From the County Health Department (memphisflyer.com) — Memphis City Council members are pressing the Shelby County Health Department to answer air-quality and pollution questions in person, especially for predominantly Black neighborhoods near heavy industry and data centers. The council delayed its final vote on a data center moratorium to October and hopes to hear directly from county health officials at an October 6 meeting, following new research on air impacts in Southwest Memphis.

Long-time Shelby County prosecutor appointed as criminal court judge (commercialappeal.com) — Shelby County has appointed veteran prosecutor Paul Hagerman to serve as judge for the county's newly created criminal court, restoring a seat lost after a previous judge resigned. Hagerman, known for handling major cases like the Young Dolph murder prosecution, will now oversee some of the most serious criminal matters affecting Memphis residents.
   

5. 'Another day at the office:' Rare Southaven bobcat sighting highlights growing research at Memphis Zoo (actionnews5.com) — Memphis residents are seeing more evidence of bobcats and other wildlife as the Memphis Zoo expands a new camera network across Shelby County, from the zoo past Shelby Forest and Shelby Farms. Researchers say extreme summer heat and development may be pushing animals into neighborhoods, and they're urging Memphians to focus on coexistence while the project tracks more than 20 species so far.
