📰 News we're reading

1. Tour of aging Juvenile Court reveals problems (wreg.com) — Memphis' aging Juvenile Court building on Adams is facing serious environmental and structural problems, including mold, asbestos, leaks, and unsafe drinking water, as leaders debate its future. Judge Tarik Sugarmon and Mayor Lee Harris are weighing costly renovation versus building an entirely new facility, with one proposed replacement site on Adams deemed inadequate. The outcome could significantly affect court operations and families using the system.

2. Man accused of killing wife, driving body to Memphis agrees to extradition (actionnews5.com) — Memphis police stopped a car Thursday night and discovered a woman's body in the passenger seat, launching a homicide investigation that led to the driver's arrest. The Louisiana man accused of killing his wife and driving her body to Memphis has now appeared in a Shelby County courtroom and agreed to extradition back to Louisiana to face charges.

3. Fallen World War II veteran returns home to Memphis after 8 decades (commercialappeal.com) — After more than 80 years, the remains of World War II Staff Sgt. Michael A. Cianciolo have finally been brought back to Memphis, where a memorial service was held at Memphis Funeral Home. Thanks to DNA technology, his family could honor him locally before a procession escorted him to burial at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.

4. Woman accuses man of assaulting her 5-year-old daughter (wreg.com) — Memphis police are investigating after a local mother says her five-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by a man who was supposed to be watching her children. Neighbors intervened and detained the suspect, who was hospitalized after being beaten, but no charges have been filed yet as the investigation continues.

5. In the Cattle Markets: Structural Adjustments Continue (morningagclips.com) — A national look at beef packing economics notes that JBS has already closed a small further-processing facility in Memphis, part of broader industry cutbacks driven by high fixed costs and tight cattle supplies. While the focus is national, the closure underscores how Memphis is tied into shifting meatpacking jobs and capacity across the country.
