Some Dallas Homes to Move from Alley to Curbside Garbage Collection
The change will go into effect on Feb. 1.
Some Dallas homes will transition from alley to curb garbage and recycling collection effective Feb. 1.
The Department of Sanitation Services posted a webpage with information about the transition.
According to the transition page, the change is due to the fact that some alleys are too narrow, or have surfaces like dirt, gravel, or broken pavement that aren't safe or efficient for garbage and recycle pickup.

Narrow alleys can leave too little room for a truck to pass and for crews on foot to safely work. Deteriorated surface conditions can delay service and damage equipment.
Additionally, dead-end alleys present significant challenges as drivers must back out over long distances in confined spaces.

As part of a citywide review, about 200 alley blocks (and approximately 6,000 homes) are moving to curbside service to keep pickup both safe and reliable.
It's important to note that this only affects a limited number of homes and 98% of sanitation customers will be no change to their service.
If a home is included in transition, its garbage and recycling collection point will move from the alley to the curb in front of the home. Residents will receive a mailed notice before the switch. Collection days will remain the same.
If a home is not included in the transition, nothing will change. The large majority of Dallas homes will continue to receive approved alley collection where conditions allow for safe and reliable service.
The transition page features a map that allows residents to input their home address and determine if their home is on the list of included homes. Homes on the map without a blue marker are not included.
