📰 News we're reading

1. Austin ISD appeals TEA accountability ratings for 2 failing middle schools (kvue.com) — Austin ISD is appealing the state's failing accountability ratings for Burnet and Webb middle schools, which have now received "F" grades for five straight years. District leaders say they're exploring options for students and families, while a parent petition could trigger a formal closure plan if most families at the schools sign on before final ratings in December.

2. 100 Club expands mental health support for Central Texas first responders (kvue.com) — First responders in Austin and surrounding Central Texas counties now have access to new financial help for mental health care through the 100 Club of Central Texas. Paired with APD's new RESET Project and support welcomed by Austin firefighters, this expanded benefit aims to reduce stigma and make confidential counseling more affordable for those on the front lines.

3. Housing advocates hope City of Austin contract switch builds on affordability momentum (kxan.com) — Austin City Council is about to vote on two major Clariti software contracts that could overhaul the city's slow, complex permitting system and affect housing costs here. Affordable housing builders say faster, more efficient reviews could lower project expenses and support new developments like Burleson Studios, adding over 100 income-restricted units for Austin residents.

4. Preserving an Austin Icon: Scotty Sayers on the Importance of Lions Municipal Golf Course at the Imagine Muny Gala (kxan.com) — Supporters gathered at the Imagine Muny Gala to raise money and awareness for preserving Lions Municipal Golf Course, a 102-year-old Austin landmark many residents see as one of the city's defining green spaces. Longtime advocate Scotty Sayers says keeping "Muny" thriving protects Austin's history, character, and remaining beloved public places as growth pressures increase.

5. The Guitar Center Experience & Next Gen Stage At The 2026 Crossroads Guitar Festival (whereseric.com) — Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival hits Austin's Moody Center on September 26–27, with ticket holders invited to arrive early for the Guitar Center Experience on the main concourse.
