📰 News we're reading

1. City of Austin launches initiative aimed at reducing cycle of homelessness, emergency room visits and arrests (kvue.com) — Austin is launching a "No Wrong Door" initiative to better coordinate services for about 950 high-need residents who frequently cycle through homelessness, ER visits, and arrests. Seventeen local agencies, from APD to Central Health and ECHO, will share data, meet regularly, and seek new funding to reduce costs and improve outcomes.

2. Jalapeño recall hits Central Texas grocery stores, no confirmed cases in Austin yet (cbsaustin.com) — A multistate Salmonella outbreak tied to jalapeños has triggered recalls at major chains, but Austin Public Health says no cases have been confirmed yet in Austin or Travis County. Local H-E-B and Whole Foods stores have pulled dozens of jalapeño-related products, while health officials urge residents to wash produce thoroughly and see a doctor if they develop symptoms.

3. Austin ISD prepares 103 bus hubs, but staffing at every location isn't guaranteed (cbsaustin.com) — Austin ISD is rolling out 103 new bus hubs for high school students as classes begin, but can't guarantee staff at every location and may still tweak the list. Middle schoolers will keep neighborhood stops after parent pushback, cutting projected cost savings but making daily commutes easier for many Austin families.

4. One of Austin's most unique H-E-Bs is getting a refresh. (lmtonline.com) — An H-E-B in Austin's Mueller neighborhood is scheduled for a major "fresh initiative" renovation this winter, upgrading prepared foods, deli, and other in-store features. The project, filed with the state this month, is slated to run from late November through December and continues H-E-B's broader wave of Central Texas store refreshes.

5. Family raises reward as search continues for answers in Austin woman's death (kvue.com) — The family of Francesca "Frenchie" Ortiz has raised a reward to $5,000 as Austin police continue investigating her June death at a southeast Austin apartment complex.
