• Harlingen residents form group to protect resaca from drying up again (krgv.com) — Neighbors along a Harlingen resaca that nearly dried up this summer have formed the Harlingen Resaca Restoration Project to keep water in the waterway year-round. The group is pursuing nonprofit status, funding for engineering and environmental studies, and partnering with Cameron County Drainage District Number 3 to find practical, long-term solutions that protect wildlife, drainage, and neighborhood quality of life.
   

• Birmingham Selected to Join Love Your Block, Helping Residents Improve Neighborhoods Citywide (birminghamtimes.com) — Harlingen has been selected to join the national Love Your Block program, bringing grant funding and expert support to help residents clean up vacant lots and improve neighborhood spaces. Alongside Birmingham and other cities, Harlingen will be able to launch small, resident-led projects that strengthen community ties and give locals a bigger voice in shaping their blocks.
   

• John Allen Rubio booked in Cameron County jail ahead of competency hearing (valleycentral.com) — From Harlingen, officials report that convicted killer John Allen Rubio has been moved to the Cameron County jail ahead of an Oct. 7 hearing on whether he's competent to be executed. Rubio, on death row since 2010 for murdering his three children in Brownsville, faces a defense motion arguing he lacks a rational understanding of his death sentence.
