Mission internship program helping UTRGV students handle mosquito-borne illnesses (krgv.com) — Mission is launching a new partnership with UTRGV that will place students alongside the city’s mosquito control team to track mosquito populations and fight diseases like West Nile and Zika. Starting this fall, interns will gain real-world public health experience while boosting Mission’s efforts to keep neighborhoods safer from mosquito-borne illnesses.

Mission coffee shop remains open after break-in leaves thousands of dollars in damages (krgv.com) — A Mission coffee shop, Twisted Sistas Co. on Business 83, is staying open after a late-Wednesday break-in shattered its front door and led to about $2,000 in damage and losses. Staff say they’re adding more security cameras and are leaning on strong customer support while police work to identify whoever threw a rock through the glass and stole the cash register.

Ranking puts South Texas near bottom for new businesses (mysanantonio.com) — Mission ranks near the bottom nationally for small cities to start a business, according to a new WalletHub study comparing more than 1,300 communities. The analysis suggests local entrepreneurs face a weaker business environment than many peers, though Mission’s costs and access to resources are mid-range. The piece also compares Mission’s scores with nearby Valley cities like Pharr and Edinburg.

Monie leads UTSA throwers at Pacific Coast Invitational (goutsa.com) — Mission native and UTSA thrower Daisy Monie just delivered a career-best shot put of 16.71 meters, now ranking No. 2 all-time for the Roadrunners. Competing at the Pacific Coast Invitational in California, she also posted a strong discus mark and continues to lead the American Conference standings heading into the Mt. SAC Relays and postseason meets.
