📰 News we're reading

1. Midtown TIRZ commits to buy land for Spurs arena, other projects (sanantonioreport.org) — San Antonio's Midtown TIRZ board has committed $60 million toward buying 13 acres downtown for a proposed Spurs arena while also steering nearly $34 million to expand Brackenridge Park, the Zoo, and Botanical Gardens. The tense meeting highlighted concerns about affordable housing, displacement, and how future TIRZ funds should prioritize anti-gentrification strategies and limit reliance on scarce 2027 bond dollars.

2. City approves $2.8 million contract to upgrade traffic cameras, ease congestion (news4sanantonio.com) — San Antonio has approved a $2.8 million contract to upgrade traffic cameras so signals respond better to real-time traffic instead of rigid schedules. Officials say the improvements should reduce backups, cut idling and emissions, and address hundreds of 311 complaints about signal timing, while stressing the cameras are not tied to broader surveillance systems like Flock.

3. San Antonio launches pilot program targeting recurring homeless encampments (kens5.com) — San Antonio is rolling out a new pilot program that targets the city's most persistent homeless encampments by pairing four to six weeks of daily outreach with tougher enforcement afterward. Outreach teams and nonprofits like Corazon Ministries will work one-on-one to connect people with housing, treatment, and services before abatements, then the city and SAPD will use existing laws to keep cleared sites from quickly returning.

4. 18-wheeler crash on I-35 causes major delays (mysanantonio.com) — A crash involving an 18-wheeler shut down parts of southbound I-35 near downtown San Antonio early Friday, snarling the morning commute between Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard and Exit 155. TxDOT urged drivers to stay on the upper level and avoid the area while crews clear the scene and determine the extent of injuries and delays.

5. Small aircraft veers off runway at San Antonio International Airport (star-telegram.com) — A small private plane with three people aboard veered off a runway at San Antonio International Airport Friday morning after its nose gear collapsed during takeoff, but no one was hurt. Airport and fire crews responded quickly and worked to remove the disabled aircraft so normal operations and passenger travel could resume.
