Hungarian-American pianist Julia Hamos presents a program that bridges centuries and styles and features two of the most important composers from Hungary. Beginning with a selection from Kurtág’s Játékok, she navigates through Haydn’s Sonata in E minor, Ligeti’s Études (Arc-en-ciel, Der Zauberlehrling, Fanfares), and Mozart’s Sonata in A minor, culminating in Schumann’s beloved Fantasie in C Major. Hamos’s adventurous spirit and compelling artistry deliver an evening of captivating musical exploration.

The Music Center at Strathmore

Cécile McLorin Salvant is a composer, singer, and visual artist known for her rich contralto voice, passion for storytelling, and genre-blending style, connecting jazz to baroque, folkloric music, vaudeville, and the blues. Described by the late Jessye Norman as “a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality,” Salvant is an eclectic curator, unearthing rarely recorded, forgotten songs.

Her 2023 album, Mélusine, which features songs in French, Occitan, English, and Haitian Kreyol, received two Grammy nominations. Savant’s newest album, Oh Snap, is set to release in September 2025.

A leading voice of the harp, Brandee Younger made history at the 2022 Grammy Awards as the first Black female solo artist nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for her song “Beautiful Is Black.” Younger has performed and recorded across countless genres with artists including John Legend, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Common, Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, Ron Carter, and Charlie Haden. Additionally, her original composition “Hortense” was featured in the Netflix Concert-Documentary, Beyoncé: Homecoming. Sing Democracy 250 (SD250) will present its final signature concert on June 13, 2026, at 4:00 pm at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., culminating a nationwide series of four concerts commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The program will feature the Together In Hope Choir, Congressional Chorus, National Children's Chorus - Washington Chapter, and Main Line Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor G. Phillip Shoultz, III, alongside GRAMMY Award-winning mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves. SD250 is also a proud participant in Of the People: The Smithsonian Festival of Festivals, a sweeping national celebration showcasing America's cultural landscape through community programs and exchanges.&nbsp;

Join Hālau Hoʻomau I ka Wai Ola O Hawaiʻi&nbsp;to commemorate the arrival of a sacred Hawaiian artifact at the National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian as part of Hoʻolauleʻa: Welcoming Kānepō Ka Lua on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Alexandria, Vir.-based Hawaiian cultural school will perform on at 12 noon, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on May 16.
Led by Kumu Hula Manu Ikaika, the musicians and dancers of Hālau Hoʻomau I ka Wai Ola O Hawaiʻi will demonstrate a variety of Hawaiian instruments and implements including the ulili (Hawaiian gourd yoyo), handmade by the dancers. Other implements demonstrated in the performance will include the pahu (large standing drum used for chant and hula accompaniment), the ipu and ipu heke (hollowed gourds used as handheld drums), ‘ohe hano ihu (bamboo nose flutes), ‘uli’uli (feathered gourd rattles), ‘ili’ili
(hand-held river rocks), pū’ili (slit-ended bamboo sticks), kālā’au
(tapping sticks), ukulele and more!
