Southampton History Museum

Step into the early days of recorded sound with a live, hands-on program featuring an original Edison wax cylinder phonograph. Participants will listen to authentic recordings from the 1890s through the 1920s, explore antique phonographs up close, and, as a group, create a real recording on a wax cylinder using genuine early-1900s equipment.

Presented by the Long Island Cylinder Record Company, this engaging educational experience is designed for adults, teens, families, and STEAM audiences alike. Unique, immersive, and fun, the program brings the history of early sound out from behind museum glass and directly into your ears...and your hands!

RSVP is not required but is recommended as space is limited to just 30 seats. Please be sure to reserve your spot early.

Step into the early days of recorded sound with a live, hands-on program featuring an original Edison wax cylinder phonograph....

When people think of the American Revolution, they often picture famous land battles like Lexington &amp; Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown, but much of the war was also fought at sea. From the coasts of England and Nova Scotia to Maine and the Caribbean, the Atlantic Ocean was a vital and contested battleground.

In Yankee Doodle Goes to Sea, historian and musician Stephen Sanfilippo brings this maritime history to life through authentic songs from the era. Selections include “The Hancock,” recounting America’s first naval victory on the high seas; “The Yankee Privateer,” telling of bold captures of British merchant ships; “The Brave Town of Machias,” celebrating a Maine community’s resistance to British forces; and “The Ballad of General Woodhull,” a lyrical take on the Battle of Brooklyn.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Sanfilippo has been researching and performing historic maritime music since the 1970s. He accompanies his vocals with instruments such as guitar and mandola, often inviting audiences to join in the singing. He has performed widely at historic and cultural venues from Long Island to Maritime Canada.

Sanfilippo holds a Ph.D. in History from Stony Brook University and is a retired Assistant Professor of Maritime History at Maine Maritime Academy, where he taught through the lens of traditional sea songs. A co-founder of the Long Island Traditional Music Association, he continues to explore and share the rich musical traditions of coastal communities. He and his wife Susan divide their time between Long Island’s North Fork and Downeast Maine.

Led by fiber artist <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ericalynnhuberty.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Erica-Lynn Huberty</a>, this hands-on workshop explores the art of textile needlework as practiced in Southampton during the 17th and 18th centuries. Participants will examine authentic examples of historic needlework and learn about the important role these skills played in everyday life. After the discussion, Erica-Lynn will guide attendees through several traditional stitching techniques, and each participant will create a small piece of their own to take home. 

Space is extremely limited for this wonderful experience. Advanced ticket purchase is required. Workshop Cost: $20.00 per person&nbsp;


<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ericalynnhuberty.com/about" rel="nofollow noopener">Erica-Lynn Huberty</a> is pioneer in the contemporary fiber arts movement. Her work mingles textiles and sewing arts techniques with watercolor and ink, embroidery, crochet and knitting, loom-woven grounds, mediums overlapping as if done simultaneously.
