📰 News we're reading

1. Road construction: Making the ends meet is getting harder (vermontbiz.com) — Barre residents face delayed state transportation funding that already forced the city to self-fund Main Street repairs, even though it’s a state highway. A new statewide project list also includes VT 14 repaving through East Montpelier and Barre Town, while lawmakers debate how to fix shrinking road budgets without shifting too much money from schools.

2. Barre's cemeteries go digital, one grave at a time (northstarmonthly.com) — Barre is digitizing every grave in Hope, Elmwood, and St. Monica cemeteries, with a searchable map set to go live on the city website July 1. Residents and visitors will be able to use the CemSites app to pinpoint loved ones’ resting places by name, date, and GPS location across all three historic burial grounds.

3. Gifford Birth Notes (ourherald.com) — Several local families, including parents from Barre, recently welcomed new babies at Gifford, with birth announcements listing the children’s names and hometowns. While full details are subscriber-only for a week, Barre residents can still see that neighbors are celebrating new arrivals and know that archived birth notes become free after that period.

4. Man cited for impersonating officer in Montpelier (newportdispatch.com) — A Barre City resident has been cited after police say he used a Ford Explorer with flashing lights to stop drivers on I-89 near Montpelier this week. Vermont State Police are asking anyone who interacted with the vehicle or has information to contact the Berlin Barracks or submit an anonymous tip online or by text.

5. House lawmakers set to advance education reform plan after hours of deliberation (mynbc5.com) — Vermont House members are advancing an education reform bill that could reshape school cooperation statewide, despite a promised veto from Gov. Phil Scott. Barre Rep. Gina Galfetti argues Republicans were sidelined in crafting the plan, which includes new service areas and study committees that may recommend school district mergers and could affect small local schools.
