174 GDIT Pentagon Workers Could Face Layoffs In August
GDIT notified Virginia officials that 174 Pentagon workers may face layoffs in August, after earlier notices in Falls Church and Arlington.
PENTAGON, VA — General Dynamics Information Technology has notified Virginia officials that 174 employees at the Pentagon may be laid off in August, according to a notice posted on the Virginia Works website.
The notice, addressed to the Virginia Rapid Response team, said the workers “may experience layoffs” beginning Aug. 8, 2026, or within 14 days after that date. The notice was submitted by GDIT’s transition team and does not state a reason for the potential layoffs.
The new notice follows earlier GDIT filings affecting 236 workers in Northern Virginia. In those filings, the company said 133 employees at its Falls Church worksite at 3170 Fairview Park Drive and 103 employees at 1401 South Clark St. in Arlington could be laid off in July if contract awards or extensions do not come through.

The Falls Church notice said the potential layoffs were tied to a pending loss of work, with a recompete in process and an award pending. The Arlington notice said those potential layoffs were connected to the completion of the current base year of the F-35 Joint Program Office contract, which was scheduled to end July 31.
Taken together, the recent GDIT notices raise the number of Northern Virginia-area workers facing possible layoffs to 410.

GDIT is a business unit of Reston-based General Dynamics, one of the Washington region’s major government contractors. The layoff warnings come as General Dynamics has reported strong companywide financial results.
On April 29, General Dynamics reported first-quarter revenue of $13.5 billion, up 10.3 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. The company also reported operating earnings of $1.4 billion and diluted earnings per share of $4.10, both up 12 percent from the year-ago quarter.
“Our businesses had a very good start to the year, delivering strong operating results and excellent cash conversion,” Phebe Novakovic, chairman and chief executive officer of General Dynamics, said in the company’s earnings release. “We are positioned well to drive additional performance throughout the year.”
General Dynamics also reported $2.2 billion in cash from operating activities during the quarter and said it paid $405 million in dividends during the quarter. On June 3, the company’s board declared a regular quarterly dividend of $1.59 per share, payable Aug. 7 to shareholders of record on July 2.
The WARN Act generally requires larger employers to provide advance notice of certain layoffs and plant closings. GDIT’s Pentagon notice says the layoffs may begin one day after the dividend payment date.
The notices do not say whether the potential layoffs are final. In the earlier Falls Church and Arlington filings, GDIT said layoffs would occur if pending contract work is not awarded, renewed or extended.
