Investigation Underway After Arlington Jail Detainee Dies

ARLINGTON, VA — Authorities are investigating the death of a 62-year-old man who experienced an apparent medical emergency while being held at the Arlington County Detention Facility, officials said.

Tyrone Hines died Aug. 10 at Virginia Hospital Center, according to a joint statement from the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office and Arlington County Police Department.

Just before 8 a.m., a deputy was alerted when an emergency call button was activated inside Hines’ cell, officials said. The deputy saw Hines experiencing an apparent medical emergency and immediately contacted the detention facility’s medical staff.

Medical personnel began providing emergency treatment and lifesaving measures, according to authorities. Arlington County Fire Department personnel continued emergency care after arriving at the facility.

Hines was transported to Virginia Hospital Center, where lifesaving efforts continued. He was later pronounced dead in the hospital’s emergency department.

Hines had been held at the detention facility since July 30, 2025, on an attempted robbery charge, officials said. His family was notified of his death.

Arlington County police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death with the cooperation of the sheriff’s office. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

The sheriff’s office will conduct a separate administrative investigation and mortality review.
