Arlington Woman Among 4 More Arrested After Teen’s Fatal Shooting: Police

ARLINGTON, VA — An 18-year-old Arlington woman is among four additional suspects arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy during an alleged robbery attempt in Woodbridge, according to Prince William County police.

Janaiya Lolita Talley is charged with felony murder and attempted robbery, police said. Prince William General District Court records say she was arrested on Friday and identify the attempted robbery count as a Class 5 felony involving the alleged use of a firearm.

Talley remains in custody and is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.

Shooting Investigation Leads To Arrests

Police said Talley and a 17-year-old Woodbridge girl joined the Triangle teenager in arranging to confront and rob Damon Jamon Atwater on July 5. During the encounter in the 16700 block of Blackjack Oak Lane, someone fired a gun, fatally wounding the 16-year-old, according to police.

Officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. to investigate the report of a shooting. They found the teenager wounded in a parking lot, police previously said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators initially said the shooting did not appear random and sought the driver of a vehicle seen leaving the area. Officers later tried to stop a vehicle matching its description near Cardinal Drive and Emil Court, according to an earlier report.

The driver continued to Powell’s Creek Boulevard and Blue Pool Lane before stopping and running away, police said.

Investigators identified the alleged driver as Darrian King Rutherford, 18, of Woodbridge. Court records show Rutherford was arrested Thursday on a Class 6 felony charge of eluding or disregarding police. He was released on his own recognizance, and his arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 16.

Police arrested the 17-year-old Woodbridge girl Aug. 11 on felony murder and attempted robbery charges. Her name was not released because she is a minor.

Evidence Charge Filed Against Woodbridge Man

Keshaun Maurice Hodge-Richards, 21, of Woodbridge, was arrested Monday after police accused him of tampering with evidence at the shooting scene before officers arrived.

Court records list a Class 6 felony charge of destroying evidence under Virginia Code Section 18.2-462. Hodge-Richards was arraigned on Tuesday and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Oct. 16.

Atwater, 25, was arrested July 30. Police charged him with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Police said Talley, the juvenile and Hodge-Richards were being held without bond.

Prince William County police said Arlington County police and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force assisted with the arrests.

The charges are accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
