Arlington Announces July 4 Road Closures, Traffic Restrictions

ARLINGTON, VA — Drivers traveling through Arlington on Independence Day should expect widespread road closures and significant traffic delays as thousands of people gather to watch the National Independence Day fireworks over the National Mall.

The Arlington County Police Department, Virginia State Police, U.S. Park Police and the Virginia Department of Transportation will implement a series of temporary road closures Friday, July 4, to manage traffic and pedestrian safety around the celebration.

Among the affected areas are roads surrounding Arlington National Cemetery, the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial and Arlington Memorial Bridge. Closures will begin during the afternoon, with additional roads shutting down throughout the evening before reopening after crowds disperse following the fireworks. Officials said reopening times will depend on pedestrian and vehicle traffic conditions

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible and use Metro or other public transportation. Drivers should also expect heavy congestion before and after the fireworks display.

Road Closures Planned

Roads expected to close at various times include:

• Arlington Memorial Bridge and Memorial Circle
• Marshall Drive between Route 110 and North Meade Street
• North Meade Street between Marshall Drive and North Arlington Boulevard
• Washington Boulevard near the Marine Corps War Memorial
• Sections of Route 110 and other nearby roadways as directed by law enforcement.

County officials reminded drivers that stopping or standing in travel lanes to watch the fireworks is prohibited and may result in citations. Parking is also prohibited on the shoulders of Route 110, Arlington Boulevard (Route 50) and the George Washington Memorial Parkway, where enforcement will be increased during the holiday.

Safety Reminder

Police are also urging residents to plan ahead if celebrating the holiday with alcohol. Officials recommend designating a sober driver or using a taxi or rideshare service.
