What's Open And Closed Around Arlington For The Independence Day Holiday
Arlington County offices, libraries and some transit services will close or operate on modified schedules for the Independence Day holiday.
ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County government offices and several public services will operate on modified schedules for the Independence Day holiday, with most county offices closing Friday, July 3, in observance of the July 4 holiday.
While many county services will pause for the holiday, curbside trash, recycling, organics and special collections will continue on their regular schedules. Parking meters also will not be enforced on the holiday, though permit parking restrictions remain in effect unless otherwise posted.

County Offices And Courts
Arlington County government offices, Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and Courts & Judicial Services will be closed Friday, July 3. Fingerprinting services at the Arlington County Sheriff's Office also will be unavailable because the courts are closed.
Libraries
All Arlington Public Library locations will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Libraries will reopen under their regular schedules after the holiday.

Trash And Recycling
Residential curbside trash, recycling, organics and special collection routes will operate on their normal schedules despite the holiday.
Parking
Parking meters will not be enforced on the holiday. However, residential permit parking restrictions remain in effect unless signs indicate otherwise. All other parking regulations will continue to be enforced.
Transit
ART routes 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87will operate on Sunday schedules Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. All other ART bus routes will not operate, and the ART customer service call center will be closed. STAR service will cancel all trips except dialysis transportation.
Parks And Recreation
County spraygrounds will remain open with expanded hours because of the ongoing heat advisory. Information on recreation facilities and additional holiday schedules is available through Arlington County.
Residents planning to attend Independence Day festivities should also be aware of numerous road closures around the National Mall, Potomac River crossings and surrounding Arlington roadways on Saturday, July 4, as local, state and federal agencies manage traffic for fireworks and other events.
Metro Holiday Schedule
Metro said it will operate modified service for Independence Day, with additional Metrorail service for fireworks crowds and bus schedule changes.
On Saturday, July 4, Metrorail will run from 6 a.m. until 2 a.m. Sunday. Metro said it will add service during the afternoon and evening for people traveling to Fourth of July events in Washington, D.C.
Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule on July 4. Riders should expect detours, delays and route changes near the National Mall because of road closures for Independence Day events.
MetroAccess will operate with reservation service, but regularly scheduled subscription trips will be canceled for the holiday and must be rebooked.
Metro recommends that riders avoid Smithsonian Station after the fireworks because of heavy crowds and use nearby stations when possible, including Federal Triangle, L’Enfant Plaza, Archives, Metro Center, Federal Center SW or Capitol South.
Metro also has a separate holiday schedule for Friday, July 3, the observed Independence Day holiday. Riders should check schedules before traveling.
Virginia State Government Offices
Most Commonwealth of Virginia government offices will be closed Friday, July 3, because Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4. This follows the state's official 2026 holiday calendar.
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
The Virginia DMV has announced:
- All full-service DMV Customer Service Centers will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4.
- The Customer Contact Center also will be closed both days.
- DMV notes that more than 50 services remain available online at dmv.virginia.gov during the closure.
- DMV Select offices may have different schedules because they are operated by local governments.
Virginia ABC Stores
Virginia ABC stores will remain open on Independence Day, but with reduced hours. All Virginia ABC stores will close at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.
