Firefighters arrived and found fire showing from the front and sides of a two-story single-family home. Crews deployed hose lines and requested a Rapid Intervention Task Force for additional resources.

Searches confirmed that everyone inside the home had gotten out. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which had extended into the home’s living space, and remained at the scene for an extended period to overhaul the structure.

The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was accidental. Investigators said it was caused by the improper disposal of recently used wood chips from a smoker into a plastic container in the garage.

Damage was estimated at $348,480, including $211,200 to the structure and $137,280 to the contents.

Two adults, three juveniles, four cats and two dogs were displaced and are staying locally, officials said. No civilians or first responders were injured.

Outdoor Cooking Safety Tips

  • For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks by applying a soap-and-water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If it is leaking, turn off the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, have the grill serviced by a professional before using it. If the leak does not stop, call 911.
  • Keep grills clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below the grill.
  • Keep grills at least 15 feet from structures, away from siding, deck railings and anything flammable, and a safe distance from eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling area, and never leave a grill unattended.
  • When using starter fluid for charcoal grilling, use only charcoal starter fluid. Do not add lighter fluid or other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • After grilling or smoking, let coals cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container away from any structures.
