9-Year-Old Dies After Herndon-Area Scooter Crash, Police Say

HERNDON, VA — A 9-year-old boy died Thursday evening after he was struck by a minivan while riding an electric scooter in a Herndon-area neighborhood, according to Fairfax County police.

Officers responded around 5:30 p.m. to the 3000 block of Madden Court near Sully Square for a reported pedestrian crash. Police said the child was riding an electric scooter when he was struck by a vehicle entering the neighborhood. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police said the driver, an adult woman, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. She is not in custody, and no charges have been announced.

According to Capt. Chris Cosgriff, commander of FCPD's Public Affairs Bureau, the boy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Detectives have not determined whether the scooter was being powered or was being pushed manually when the collision occurred. Investigators are also still working to determine the speed of the minivan, the directions both the vehicle and scooter were traveling, and other circumstances surrounding the crash.

Members of the Crash Reconstruction Unit spent Thursday evening documenting the scene and canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance and doorbell camera footage. Cosgriff said detectives had spoken with several residents, but the results of that effort were still pending.

"This is a very tragic incident for everyone in this neighborhood and for everyone involved," Cosgriff said. "We continue to hold everyone here in our thoughts and prayers."

Cosgriff also urged parents to make sure children wear helmets and follow basic safety rules while riding bicycles and scooters.

"We do obviously encourage parents to have their kids wear helmets," he said. "Teach them the basic safety rules. Keep an eye on them. ... Don't hesitate to speak up if you see something dangerous, whether it's your kid or not."

Madden Court at Highland Mews was closed in both directions Thursday evening while investigators processed the crash scene.
