MIDDLEBURG, VA — After six weeks of cleaning, rebuilding, and reordering what turned out to be nearly an entire bookstore, Middleburg Books will officially reopen its doors on Thursday, March 5.

The brief fire sparked when a candle ignited holiday greenery required an extensive cleanup, the business said in a news release. Smoke damage and fire-extinguisher residue ultimately required the owners to replace the shop's entire inventory.

"What followed, however, was something closer to a masterclass in small-town generosity. Hundreds of notes of encouragement arrived. Online orders poured in. Friends offered borrowed spaces. Deliveries were rerouted through garages and living rooms," the store owners said in the release. "And there was an extraordinary amount of coffee and chocolate fueling the team."

As it rebuilt the team used the recovery to rethink the shop’s next chapter — what it means to be a truly great independent bookshop, why customers have loved its service, and what kind of space invites people to go out of their way to visit.

The refreshed Middlesburg Books shop at 17 South Madison Street, focuses on curated discovery, conversation, and the delight of stumbling across the exact book you didn’t know you were looking for until it found you. The goal, the team says, is for customers to feel as though they are returning home — with a few lovely new touches.

Opening weekend will feature extended hours, celebrations, and thousands of newly arrived titles returning to shelves.

“We’ve missed the small daily moments most,” said owner Mary Beth Morell in the release. “The regulars who stop in just to say hello. The conversations at the counter. The spirited debates about plot twists and unsatisfying book endings. The children who come back because the last stack of books we handed them turned into favorites.”

Morell added, “A bookstore is never just about the books. It’s about relationships — and we’re very ready to have ours back.”

Middleburg Books, opened in September 2023, said it has enjoyed huge community support and success. In addition to robust book sales, the shop has been successful in developing creative book clubs, including one centered around cookbooks with members convening and bringing their favorite dishes from the books. It is also a town centerpiece where visitors and residents gather to catch up and exchange information on the latest hot book titles.
