David Welker as John Champe spoke his experience during the Revolutionary War
Sgt Maj John Champe Historian David Welker gave a first person reenactment of John Champe, telling his story about the assignment from General George Washington to attempt capture of the traitor Benedict Arnold. He related how he faked desertion from Major Henry Light Horse Harry Lee's regiment, convinced the British he was a traitor, and how he managed to get a job with ready access to Arnold. Arnold was ordered to take his troops on the Virginia Campaign a few days before the capture was planned. Although he did not capture Arnold, Champe was able to report that Arnold acted alone and did not have co-conspirators.
