Alexandria Nonprofits Receive Diapers, Baby Wipes Through Regional Donation Drive

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Nearly a dozen Alexandria-area nonprofits received diapers and baby wipes as part of a regional donation drive that collected nearly 1.3 million items for families experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

HomeAid National Capital Region announced Wednesday that its 2026 Builders for Babies program distributed 1,292,097 diapers and wipes to 52 nonprofits in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Richmond — the program's largest distribution to date.

Alexandria organizations receiving donations included ALIVE! Inc., The Child and Family Network Centers, St. John's Community Services, Mother of Light Center, The Center for Alexandria's Children, United Community, Rising Hope Mission, Carpenter's Shelter, The Campagna Center and Community Lodgings Inc.

Some organizations began distributing the supplies immediately to families in urgent need, according to HomeAid.

The annual Builders for Babies drive runs from Mother's Day through Father's Day and collects diapers and wipes from builders, businesses, community collection sites and individual donors.

Unlike some other necessities, diapers aren't covered by the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or Women, Infants and Children benefits, and babies can run through diapers very quickly. Without adequate diapers, parents might not be able to send their children to daycare, creating an obstacle to working.

HomeAid said demand increased this year, with the organization receiving a record number of requests for diapers and wipes.

The 52 recipient organizations provide services ranging from emergency shelter and transitional housing to domestic violence assistance, food pantries and early childhood programs.

HomeAid National Capital Region launched Builders for Babies in 2018. Hundreds of volunteers and participating organizations help collect, sort, transport and distribute the donated supplies each year.
