Alexandria Street Food Cafe Makes Eater's List Of Hottest New Restaurants

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria’s Indian street food newcomer, Bombay Canteen, was named by food website Eater as one of the Washington, D.C., area’s most intriguing new restaurants, the only Northern Virginia eatery on a list of 15.

Eater’s restaurant heat map highlights Bombay Canteen offerings like slow-cooked curries, potato fritter sandwiches and house-made gelato flavors. They also have favorites like biryanis, butter chicken and a kebab.

The Bollywood-themed decor, including a real Bombay taxi or tuk tuk, cranks up the vibe at the eatery by Asad Sheikh and chef/partner Nishi Barua. Sheikh will be familiar to Indian food lovers in DC as the man behind Bombay Street Food in Columbia Heights, London Curry House and more.

Sheikh and Barua dropped by the ABC 7 studios earlier this month to discuss their favorite dishes and advise customers on some absolute musts, including samosa chaat in a tiffin box.

Eater’s list of April’s buzziest places to grab a bite considered only restaurants open for six months or less.

Bombay Canteen opened in February at 2010 Eisenhower Avenue. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
