City To Remove 20 Parking Spaces From Russell Road As Part Of School Safety Improvements

Alexandria will remove 20 parking spaces from Russell Road to slow traffic and improve safety for students at Naomi L. Brooks Elementary.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria’s Traffic and Parking Board voted Monday night to remove 20 parking spaces on several blocks of Russell Road, according to a new report.

ALX Now reports that the final agreement removes more parking spaces than staff initially proposed. The removals will affect parking spaces on the 300 to 800 blocks of Russell Road.

The removal of the spaces will allow for a street redesign that includes painted curb extensions, high-visibility crosswalk markings, improved curb ramps, median crossing islands and a new pedestrian crossing, according to ALX Now.

The agreement included an amendment directing city staff to generate parking proposals for staff at Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School, which does not have off-street parking. Staff have used those Russell Road spaces in the past.
