New Storms Threaten VA As Thousands Remain Without Power

While the biggest storm threat to the region has passed, Mother Nature isn't quite done with Virginia just yet.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service keeps most of the state under a hazardous weather outlook on Tuesday.

In Northern Virginia, forecasters warn that scattered severe thunderstorms on Tuesday could bring damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph to the D.C. region.

Isolated chances for flash flooding are also possible during the afternoon and evening as the state sees humid conditions and temperatures ranging between the mid- to upper 80s.

By Wednesday, rain chances will continue through the rest of the workweek, although widespread or all-day rainfall is not expected, according to the National Weather Service.

There is a chance of showers Wednesday, mainly before 8 a.m., followed by an additional chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night. Thursday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

Friday brings another chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m.

Power Outages From Monday Storms

Northern Virginia’s largest remaining concentration of outages on Tuesday was in Arlington County, where about 550 customers were without power early Tuesday afternoon as crews continued repairing damage from Monday’s severe thunderstorms.

Loudoun County had about 190 Dominion Energy customers without service. NOVEC reported two outages in Loudoun as of 12:45 p.m., down from 147 about 90 minutes earlier.

About 25 customers remained without power in Alexandria, while Fairfax County had 18. Prince William County and Falls Church reported isolated outages.

Outages were more widespread elsewhere in Virginia, with about 18,150 homes and businesses without electricity statewide, according to PowerOutage.us. Dominion Energy accounted for about 12,700 of those outages, while Appalachian Power reported about 4,500.

Albemarle County had the most outages, with about 3,800 customers without power, or more than 6% of those tracked. Virginia Beach had about 2,350 outages, followed by Newport News with about 1,435, Campbell County with about 1,250, Chesterfield County with about 1,050 and Nelson County with about 1,035.

The outage data did not identify the cause of every service interruption, meaning not all could be definitively attributed to Monday’s storms.
