2 Alexandria Middle Schools To Be Supplied With Back To School Kits Through United Way

ALEXANDRIA, VA – United Way of the National Capital Area is holding its annual Back to School Stuff the Bus initiative on Monday. The initiative provides school supplies to nearly 1,000 students across seven schools in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, United Way says.

The Stuff the Bus school supply kits will go to seven area Title 1 schools: schools with large low-income populations that are eligible for federal funding for educational support.

Two Alexandria schools will be supported by the initiative: Francis C. Hammond Middle School and Walt Whitman Middle School. Other schools receiving support are

• A. Mario Loiederman Middle School (Silver Spring, Maryland)

• Buck Lodge Middle School (Hyattsville, Maryland)

• High Point High School (Beltsville, Maryland)

• H.D. Woodson High School (Washington, D.C.)

• Kelly Miller Middle School (Washington, DC)

Now in its 10th year, the initiative is intended to help alleviate inequality in education in the region.

The campaign provides backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies to middle school students at the selected schools. The backpacks contain binders, dividers and folders; paper, composition books and sticky notes; pens, pencils, highlighters, pencil sharpeners and erasers; earbuds with microphones and more. United Way has a wishlist where donors can buy school items for the campaign directly here.

This year's Stuff the Bus event will be held on Monday, Aug. 17, at United Way Worldwide’s Alexandria headquarters at 701 N. Fairfax St.
