VA Reveals The State's Top Baby Names For 2025

From timeless classics to cultural gems to picks that trend year after year, Virginia's top baby names for 2025 have been revealed.

The Virginia Department of Health and Office of Vital Records on Tuesday released its list of the top 15 baby names for children born in the Commonwealth in 2025. In all, 96,683 babies were born in Virginia last year, officials said.

Liam and Charlotte held on to the top spots as Virginia’s most popular baby names in 2025, just as they did in 2024.

“What I love about these names is that they never feel outdated,” said Chief Deputy State Registrar Celes Davis. “They’ve stood the test of time, and there’s a reason families continue to choose them — they’re strong, beautiful and meaningful in every stage of life.”

These were the top 15 boy names in 2025, according to state records:

1. Liam
2. Noah
3. Oliver
4. Theodore
5. Henry
6. William
7. James
8. Elijah
9. Lucas
10. John
11. Benjamin
12. Levi
13. Samuel
14. Thomas
15. Daniel

And these were the top 15 girl names:

1. Charlotte
2. Emma
3. Sophia
4. Olivia
5. Amelia
6. Isabella
7. Evelyn
8. Mia
9. Elizabeth
10. Eleanor
11. Ava
12. Eliana
13. Ailany
14. Lily
15. Sofia

Names selected by parents have changed since 2000, when Jacob and Hannah topped the charts as the most popular baby names. That year, 869 baby boys were named Jacob and 708 baby girls were named Hannah. Other classics like Christopher, Madison, Joshua and Elizabeth followed close behind.

Information on popular names in each of the 50 states, dating back to 1960, is available from the Social Security Administration by using its Popular Names by Decade tool.

• Day Most Births Occurred on: September 5 (351 births)
• Most common birthday of the week: Wednesday (15,144 births)
• Least common birthday of the week: Sunday (9,314 births)
• Total Born as Twins: 2,837
• Total Born as Triplets: 55
• New Year’s Eve Births (December 31, 2024): 177
• New Year’s Day Births (January 1, 2025): 220
• Babies sharing a birthday with Mom: 267
• Babies sharing a birthday with Dad: 268
