Reston East Planning Study Open House Scheduled For July 27

RESTON, VA — Reston residents will have an opportunity to learn more about the future of eastern Reston and provide feedback during a community open house on the Reston East Planning Study on Monday, July 27.

Hosted by Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn, the open house will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the lecture hall at Langston Hughes Middle School, 11401 Ridge Heights Road.

County planning staff will provide an update on the ongoing study, discuss key planning considerations, answer questions and gather public input before recommendations are developed.

The Reston East Planning Study is evaluating whether portions of eastern Reston currently designated for office, light industrial, institutional, and research and development uses should also allow residential development under Fairfax County's Comprehensive Plan. The study area is located north of Sunrise Valley Drive between Upper Lake Drive and Hunter Mill Road.

The study includes five pending Comprehensive Plan amendment requests involving properties on Robert Fulton Drive, Alexander Bell Drive and Parkridge Boulevard. According to the county, the planning process will consider how future land use changes could affect transportation, parks, schools, environmental resources and other public facilities.

Builds On Earlier Expansion Of Study Area

As Patch previously reported, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted this spring to expand the Reston East Planning Study from several individual properties to the entire Reston East Non-Transit Station Area. County officials said the broader approach would allow planners to evaluate redevelopment opportunities across the area rather than considering each site independently.

The expanded study encompasses 35 parcels and is expected to result in recommendations on whether Fairfax County should amend its Comprehensive Plan. Any future redevelopment proposals would still require separate public hearings and approvals before construction could move forward.

Residents attending Monday's open house will be able to review study materials, speak directly with planning staff and submit comments that will help inform the county's recommendations.
