Occoquan Road Weekend Closure Planned In Woodbridge

WOODBRIDGE, VA — Drivers traveling through Woodbridge should prepare for a weekend closure of Occoquan Road as crews continue work on the I-95 and Route 123 interchange, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Occoquan Road will be closed to through traffic between Horner and Old Bridge roads from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, weather permitting.

The closure will allow crews to demolish a portion of the southbound I-95 bridge over Occoquan Road. Drivers who need to reach properties along Occoquan Road will still have access, but vehicles will not be able to travel beneath the I-95 overpass in either direction.

Through traffic will be detoured using Horner Road, Route 123/Gordon Boulevard and Old Bridge Road before returning to Occoquan Road.

The work follows a traffic shift earlier this month that moved the southbound I-95 general-purpose lanes onto a newly constructed section of the bridge. That shift cleared the way for crews to demolish and rebuild the remaining portion of the existing bridge.

The bridge work is part of a larger project to improve the I-95 and Route 123 interchange. Improvements include widening and reconfiguring several ramps, modifying access to the I-95 Express Lanes and adding a shared-use path along northbound Route 123.

Construction along southbound I-95, including the Occoquan Road bridge, is scheduled for completion in late 2027. The entire interchange project is expected to be finished in late 2028.
