Kelso teen arrested after fatal April rollover in Rose Valley (tri-cityherald.com) — A 19-year-old from Kelso has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide after an April rollover crash in Rose Valley that killed an 18-year-old Longview passenger. Investigators say speed, alcohol and THC were factors, and the driver’s first appearance in Cowlitz County Superior Court is set for Wednesday afternoon.
   

2. ‘That's what firefighters do': Longview fire chief praises rescue crews' response after implosion (dailydispatch.com) — Kelso and Longview firefighters were among the first on scene after the recent implosion at the Nippon Dynawave paper mill, rescuing nine people from chemical-soaked debris. One firefighter was injured when corrosive fluid soaked his gear, and crews then spent days, with contractors’ help, recovering the 11 people who died so families could have closure.
   

3. Autopsy reports reveal alkaline chemical burns in 10 victims of Longview paper mill explosion (mynorthwest.com) — Kelso residents are among the workers identified in newly released autopsy reports from the deadly Nippon Dynawave paper mill explosion in nearby Longview, where all 10 victims suffered alkaline chemical burns. Officials say Longview’s air and drinking water now test safe, while recovery crews and investigators continue work at the mill and community support efforts ramp up for affected families.
   

4. Nippon Dynawave Foundation awards scholarships to family of Longview staff (tri-cityherald.com) — A Pacific Lutheran University student who works seasonally for the city of Kelso has earned a $2,000 Nippon Dynawave Foundation scholarship and hopes to return home as a physical therapist. Two other students with family ties to the Longview mill also received scholarships, funded by ongoing community donations to the foundation.
