📰 News we're reading

• City issues proclamations to raise awareness (mi-reporter.com) — Mercer Island City Council has issued four new proclamations highlighting childhood cancer, recovery from mental health and substance use, disaster preparedness, and hunger awareness. These designations aim to rally Islanders around supporting affected families, using local Youth and Family Services resources, and staying ready for emergencies while helping neighbors facing food insecurity.

• Ed Pepple Court to be unveiled / Greg Asimakoupoulos (mi-reporter.com) — Mercer Island residents are invited to a Dec. 18 celebration at Mercer Island High School, where the basketball court will be officially named Ed Pepple Court in honor of the legendary coach. The event, held before the Bellevue–Mercer Island game, will feature a reception, Pepple's family, former players, and community leaders reflecting on his decades of influence on local youth.

• WSP investigating incident on Interstate 90 bridge trail (bellevuereporter.com) — A car recently drove the length of the I-90 bike and pedestrian trail after entering from the Mercer Island side, prompting a Washington State Patrol investigation and social media concern. No injuries were reported, but the city of Mercer Island is now working with WSDOT to evaluate safety fixes like signage or other barriers, and WSP is asking residents for any video or tips.
