📰 News we're reading

1. Pasco councilman calls for proactive approach to attract major retailers and manufacturers (applevalleynewsnow.com) — Pasco residents may soon see bigger-name retailers and new manufacturing jobs as Councilman Leo Perales pushes the city to aggressively recruit businesses and support Broadmoor-area development. He highlights new 10-year property tax waivers for manufacturers and wants Pasco to compete more directly with Richland and Kennewick after past setbacks like the Costco project.

2. New Eastern Washington rail deal to help farmers get products to Puget Sound ports (yakimaherald.com) — A major new rail deal at Big Pasco Industrial Park could turn Pasco into an inland port, giving local farmers and businesses a direct rail link to Seattle and Tacoma seaports. Savage Enterprises will lease and upgrade track to handle long, double-stacked BNSF trains, boosting shipping options but potentially increasing train-related traffic delays near the complex.

3. Raw meat too warm, moldy food: Latest Tri-Cities-area restaurant inspections (tri-cityherald.com) — Recent Benton-Franklin Health District inspections found serious food-safety violations at several Tri-Cities spots, including Eastside Brothers and Kim’s Market in Pasco, while others like Angel Brook Ice Cream and Burns Korners passed. The report details issues such as unsafe temperatures, moldy food, and cross-contamination, along with many clean inspections. Pasco diners can quickly see which local establishments recently failed or passed.

4. Collisions on Highway 395 result in Crash Prevention Zone, lowered speeds (franklincountygraphic.net) — If you drive Highway 395 between Pasco and Mesa, expect lower speed limits, doubled fines, and more enforcement in a new Crash Prevention Zone aimed at reducing serious collisions. Local leaders, including Pasco’s mayor, helped shape Senator Nikki Torres’ bill, which also targets safety improvements on nearby stretches of Highway 12 affecting Pasco traffic.

5. Pasco School District puts replacement levy back on April ballot after narrow February defeat (applevalleynewsnow.com) — Pasco voters are being asked again to approve a replacement school levy on the April ballot after it failed by just 59 votes in February. The measure would keep existing tax rates while funding athletics, fine arts, and other key student programs, and officials are urging residents to use ballot drop boxes after mail delays sidelined hundreds of February ballots.
