📰 News we're reading

• King County memorial sets grim record: Unclaimed remains of 626 buried (seattletimes.com) — At Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Renton, King County has just buried the unclaimed remains of 626 people under a shared marker, the highest number the county has seen. Officials, clergy, and community members gathered to read every name and reflect on rising indigent burials, linking them to housing costs, health crises, and social isolation while urging more compassion and earlier support for vulnerable neighbors who might otherwise end up here.

• Wage hike sparks debate among workers and business (ptleader.com) — Renton workers earning minimum wage are set to benefit from a 2027 statewide increase to $17.73 per hour, with the city's own minimum staying above that level. The article explains how Washington's inflation-based wage formula works, outlines new overtime thresholds, and shares how both small business owners and employees are bracing for the changes in pay and operating costs.
