1. Death notices: Oct. 7, 2026 (thereflector.com) — Several local families in Vancouver and nearby communities are mourning loved ones whose deaths are noted in this latest list of death notices. The item includes names, ages, hometowns such as Vancouver, Battle Ground and Brush Prairie, along with the funeral homes handling arrangements so friends and neighbors can reach out or pay their respects.
   

2. Second pedestrian dies in hospital after being hit by DUI suspect in Vancouver crosswalk (katu.com) — Two pedestrians struck in a Sunday night Vancouver crosswalk have now both died, after police say a suspected drunk driver ran a red light at Andresen Road and NE Van Mall Drive. A 34-year-old woman died at the scene and a 43-year-old man later died at the hospital, leading prosecutors to upgrade one vehicular assault charge to vehicular homicide.
   

3. City of Vancouver celebrates the reopening of Main Street (kptv.com) — Main Street in downtown Vancouver between 11th and Evergreen is fully reopened after nearly two years of disruptive construction, restoring access for drivers, shoppers, and nearby businesses. The $26 million project replaced aging underground utilities, added new traffic lights, outdoor seating, and public art, and was largely funded by federal COVID-era aid. Minor finishing work and tree planting will continue through Thanksgiving.
   

4. A 15-year-old lifeguard from Washington was watching the city pool. Then, he saw a figure at the bottom of the pool that almost everyone missed (newsbreak.com) — A former teenage lifeguard recalls the day he spotted a small child lying unnoticed at the bottom of Vancouver’s Jim Parsley Center pool and pulled him out just in time. The boy fully recovered, and Vancouver’s mayor later honored the young guard, highlighting how crowded local pools can challenge even vigilant staff and why their work matters.
   

5. Minor in Rhetoric and Professional Writing (wsu.edu) — WSU Vancouver students can now strengthen their career prospects with a Minor in Rhetoric and Professional Writing focused on technical, professional, and persuasive communication. The 18-credit program combines core English courses with flexible electives to build advanced writing and editing skills. It’s designed to complement many majors while preparing graduates for communication-heavy roles in today’s job market.
