1. GW high school to be closed Wednesday for HVAC repairs; cooling centers set up in Capital City (wchsnetwork.com) — George Washington High School in Charleston will be closed Wednesday while a new main breaker is installed in its HVAC system after ongoing heat-related issues. With a heat advisory in effect, residents can cool off at three city centers on Smith Street, West Washington Street, and the Martin Luther King Center during extended hours. 
2. New Charleston facility opens for women in recovery (wowktv.com) — A new Hope For All facility in Charleston has opened, nearly doubling capacity to house women in recovery and their children while they work and rebuild independence. The faith-based program partners with financial counselors and True Freedom Missions to help residents secure jobs, housing, and transportation, offering long-term sober living support right in the community.
3. Football teams tackle the heat at practice (wsaz.com) — Football players at the University of Charleston and Capital High School are battling extreme heat at Laidley Field this week, with coaches tightening safety protocols. Extra water breaks, equipment restrictions, shade time, and real-time temperature monitoring aim to prevent heat-related illness while keeping practices on track for Charleston athletes and families.
4. Decomposing grain from South Charleston derailment blamed for odor, flies near tracks (wchstv.com) — Businesses and visitors in nearby South Charleston are dealing with a strong odor and swarms of flies weeks after an Aug. 6 train derailment spilled grain along the tracks. City officials say the decomposing grain is unpleasant but not dangerous, and CSX crews are working with state regulators to finish cleanup soon, while local restaurants and hotels juggle customer complaints.
5. Kanawha County grand jury hands down indictments for child abuse, robbery and DUI cases (wchstv.com) — Several Charleston residents are among those recently indicted by a Kanawha County grand jury, facing serious charges including child abuse, DUI-related crashes, and high-speed police pursuits. The indictments detail alleged crimes that led to serious injuries, hospitalizations, and dangerous chases on local roads and interstates, underscoring ongoing public safety and justice concerns for Charleston-area residents.
