District leaders are weighing school closures, potential future referendums, and continued lead remediation while rolling out new literacy curricula and training to boost reading proficiency across Milwaukee classrooms.

Four Messmer High School students robbed, Milwaukee police still searching for suspects (wisn.com) — Four Messmer High School students were robbed at gunpoint Friday afternoon while walking on East Capitol Drive, and Milwaukee police are still searching for several teenage suspects. The school says student safety is its top priority and urges anyone with information to contact MPD or Crime Stoppers with anonymous tips.
   

3. Alderman calls out Milwaukee Police Department amid Water Street business closures (cbs58.com) — Two more businesses on downtown Milwaukee's Water Street are closing, and Ald. Bob Bauman is publicly pressing Milwaukee police to boost resources in the entertainment district amid ongoing concerns about shootings and disorder. Police say they've increased patrols, but residents and officials still question whether enough is being done to protect nightlife and keep businesses viable.
   

4. More than groceries: Milwaukee women envision community-owned food and wellness hub for Metcalfe Park (tmj4.com) — Milwaukee residents in Metcalfe Park are rallying behind a plan for Kingdom Kitchen & Grocery, a community-owned grocery and wellness hub to replace the long-vacant Pick 'n Save at 35th and North. Three Milwaukee women are pursuing city grants, co-op ownership and phased construction to restore fresh food access, health services and neighborhood gathering space on the north side.

Post From Community: Where Hope Blooms Gala (milwaukeenns.org) — Inner Beauty Center, a Milwaukee nonprofit serving women impacted by exploitation and poverty, is hosting its Where Hope Blooms fundraising gala on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the Mitchell Park Domes. The event will support outreach and drop-in services on Milwaukee's south side and invites local individuals, businesses, and churches to attend, sponsor, or donate auction items.
