Notice of Election of Municipal Officers (auburnvillager.com) — Auburn voters will choose a mayor and eight ward council members in the city’s regular municipal election on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at locations including Boykin Community Center, Frank Brown Recreation Center, several churches, and Lake Wilmore Park Recreation Center for residents who’ve lived in Auburn at least 30 days.

2. Transition underway for switch to PAAC, provost says (theplainsman.com) — Auburn University is overhauling its faculty governance, shifting from the long-standing University Senate model to a new Presidential Academic Advisory Council that centralizes oversight under the Board and president. Provost Vini Nathan outlined a transition period with an ad hoc advisory team, continued committee work, and a forthcoming website to keep faculty informed while emphasizing Auburn’s commitment to academic rigor and shared input.

3. Judge denies Ibraheem Yazeed's request for a new trial (waka.com) — A judge has denied Ibraheem Yazeed’s request for a new trial in the killing of college student Aniah Blanchard, whose disappearance began at a Chevron on South College Street in Auburn in 2019. The case, which drew national attention, led to Alabama’s “Aniah’s Law” tightening bail rules, and Yazeed will continue serving two life sentences.

4. Auburn researchers test battery-free tire sensor to prevent deadly truck blowouts (wbrc.com) — Auburn University researchers are testing a new battery-free sensor that could spot dangerous problems inside big-rig tires before they blow out, thanks to a $1.9 million federal grant. The team will run real-world tests on campus and at the National Center for Asphalt Technology Test Track, with hopes the technology could eventually improve safety for school buses and passenger cars too.

Appel receives national urban entomology award (oanow.com) — A longtime Auburn University entomologist and interim College of Agriculture dean, Arthur Appel, has received the National Conference on Urban Entomology’s top career honor. His decades of work on cockroach and structural pest management, much of it based in Auburn since 1985, have shaped modern bait strategies and advanced research across Alabama and beyond.
