📰 News we're reading

1. Alabama lawmaker calls for 'Dolly Parton Memorial Bridge' following country icon's death (256today.com) — State leaders are floating a new idea for the Mobile River Bridge: naming the future landmark the Dolly Parton Memorial Bridge, honoring the late singer's philanthropy and Southern roots. The proposal joins competing suggestions like Donald Trump, Jimmy Buffett, and Nick Saban as officials prepare for construction on the $3.2 billion Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project, expected to start in 2026.

2. Prichard questions validity of permit issued before data center moratorium (utv44.com) — Prichard officials are now questioning whether a $93 million data center project can move forward, arguing its building permit was issued improperly just before a new moratorium on data centers. With the mayor and city attorney weighing legal questions, the outcome could reshape Prichard's budget, which currently counts on big sales- and property-tax gains from the project.

3. Mobile engineer shares update on Dauphin Street construction (wkrg.com) — Drivers on Dauphin Street near I-65 can expect ongoing lane changes and construction as Mobile and ALDOT continue a long-planned safety and traffic-flow upgrade through next year. City Engineer John Forrester says crews are improving lighting, signals, and road design from the east side of I-65 toward Sage Avenue before shifting west, and he's asking residents for patience while the corridor is rebuilt.

4. Loyal Dog Waited on the Porch for Days After Family Moved Without Her, but Now She's Ready For a Forever Home (thestate.com) — A 7-year-old dog named Bertha was heartbreakingly left behind when her family moved, then taken in by City of Mobile Animal Services, where staff and volunteers rallied to find her a new home. After her story went viral on TikTok, an adopter quickly drove to the Mobile shelter, giving Bertha the loving forever family she'd been patiently waiting for.

5. Drug Education Council marks Overdose Awareness Day in Mobile (fox10tv.com) — Families, advocates, and the Drug Education Council gathered in Mobile to mark Overdose Awareness Day and launch Recovery Month, highlighting both loss and hope. New Mobile County data show overdose-related ER visits, 911 calls, and Narcan use recently spiked, even as overall numbers trend lower, and health leaders urge residents to learn about addiction, carry naloxone, and call 911 quickly.
