TUSCALOOSA, AL — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has officially proclaimed Aug. 1 as "Will Roberts Day."

The proclamation released on Wednesday honors the life of 15-year-old William "Will" Roberts, whose courageous battle with stage 4 bone cancer inspired thousands across the state and nation.

As Patch previously reported, Will died on July 23 following an 18-month fight against osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.
Will was the son of Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigation Capt. Jason Roberts and his wife, Brittney.

"Alabama is remembering Will as a brave young man whose courage inspired us all," Ivey said in a statement. "God has called him home, where he is healed and with our Savior. I am proud to honor his life well-lived by officially proclaiming Will Roberts Day in the state of Alabama. He inspired me, and he inspired us all."
Will's battle with cancer captured national attention after his family launched an online plea seeking help to access experimental treatment in California.
The effort prompted an outpouring of support from thousands of people across the country, including members of President Donald Trump's administration, along with tens of thousands in donations to help cover the costs of his specialized care.
Throughout his illness, Will became known for his unwavering faith, positive attitude and determination to encourage others despite his own suffering.
State officials said his journey united communities in prayer and served as an inspiration to children and families facing cancer.
As Patch previously reported, a visitation service for Will is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1, at Shelton State Community College.
