In Alabama, only two other cities — Hoover and Huntsville — currently hold the distinction from a national rating agency.

According to Fitch Ratings, several factors contributed to Tuscaloosa’s strong financial standing, including ample budgetary flexibility and a high revenue control assessment.

The report also highlighted the city’s adoption of a more conservative financial policy that increased the undesignated reserve fund balance requirement from 10% to 20% of General Fund budgeted expenditures.

Moody’s similarly praised Tuscaloosa’s fiscal management, citing the city’s “conservative budgeting and prudent fiscal management.”

The report also noted the strength of Tuscaloosa’s expanding local economy and continued growth in operations and reserve funds.

Mayor Walt Maddox said the reaffirmed ratings reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to responsible financial management.

“I am proud that the City of Tuscaloosa has once again earned these exceptional ratings from Fitch and Moody’s," Maddox said. "This reflects our continued commitment to responsible financial stewardship and the tireless work of our Accounting & Finance team and City Council,” said Mayor Walt Maddox. “These ratings underscore our momentum and our readiness to continue building a strong, resilient future for everyone who calls Tuscaloosa home.”
