Tuscaloosa Stuns With History, Culture And Outdoor Fun

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Tuscaloosa so special.

Tuscaloosa is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you're just an occasional visitor, you know that Tuscaloosa has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Tuscaloosa was once the state capital of Alabama, and you can still see the remnants of that history in the downtown area. Visit the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion, built in 1859, for a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the city's early elite. You can also see the old state Capitol building, which now houses the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
  • Tuscaloosa has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with plenty of opportunities to experience live music, theater and dance. Check out the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, a state-of-the-art outdoor venue that hosts top-name acts year-round. You can also catch a performance at the Bama Theatre, a beautifully restored historic venue that hosts a variety of shows.
  • Tuscaloosa is home to some of the best outdoor recreation opportunities in the state. Visit Lake Lurleen State Park, just a short drive from downtown, for fishing, hiking and camping. Or head to the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk, a scenic paved path that runs along the Black Warrior River and offers stunning views of the city skyline.
  • The city is steeped in history and culture, and there are plenty of unique landmarks to explore. Visit the Gorgas House Museum, the oldest building on the University of Alabama campus, to see what life was like in the 1800s. Or take a stroll through the Druid City Cemetery, where you can see the graves of Civil War soldiers and other prominent Tuscaloosans.
  • The Tuscaloosa River Market, located on the banks of the Black Warrior River, is a vibrant gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Browse the stalls of local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts, or take a yoga class on the riverfront.
