📰 News we're reading

1. Woman killed in hit and run crash at the intersection of Seward Highway and Benson Boulevard (alaskasnewssource.com) — A woman was killed early Saturday after being struck by a dark SUV that fled the scene at Seward Highway and Benson Boulevard in Midtown Anchorage. Police later located the vehicle and contacted the driver, and the Major Collision Investigation Unit is now handling the case, with no charges filed yet and the victim's identity pending family notification.

2. Last winter tested Anchorage's water and sewer infrastructure. Any major changes will take time. (adn.com) — Anchorage's water and sewer system struggled through last winter's deep freeze, with hundreds of frozen lines, scattered outages, and residents waiting weeks for private thawing services. AWWU leaders say preventing a repeat may require more staff, new thawing equipment, and possible fee changes, but warn that major upgrades will take time and could mean higher rates for customers.

3. Did anthropomorphic cigarette mascot Joe Camel visit Anchorage in 1992? (adn.com) — Anchorage's name and imagery were heavily used in Camel cigarette marketing, including a fictional 1992 "Hard Pack" tour stop that never actually brought Joe Camel here. Local historian David Reamer unpacks how tobacco companies targeted youth and why Anchorage's Alaska cachet made it a prime branding tool, from special matchbooks to a Fur Rendezvous T‑shirt and even a themed cooler.

4. Eight Killed When Charter Cessna Crashes Near Cape Newenham Radar Site in Western Alaska During Foggy Second Landing Attempt (parktelegraph.com) — A twin‑engine Cessna 441 that left Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport crashed Thursday near the Cape Newenham radar site, killing all eight people aboard during a foggy second landing attempt. Investigators say the wreckage lies about a third of a mile from the gravel runway, roughly 450 miles west of Anchorage, and are probing how weather and terrain contributed.

5. Alaska Charter Plane Crashes in Heavy Fog at Remote Radar Site After Anchorage Departure, Killing Eight During Second Landing Attempt, NTSB Says (parktelegraph.com) — A chartered Cessna 441 that departed Anchorage crashed in heavy fog Thursday while attempting a second landing at a remote Alaska radar site, killing all eight aboard, according to the NTSB. Investigators say the isolated location and poor visibility complicated the response and will focus on weather, pilot actions, and approach sequence as they work to determine the cause.
