Phoenix is getting a new library, and you can help pick its namesake desert plant (kjzz.org) — Phoenix is planning a new public library at Estrella Civic Space in the southwest Valley, and residents can help choose its desert-plant name. You can vote online through Oct. 2 for options like Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba, Manzanita, or Senita before the winning name goes to the city for final approval.

Phoenix mom creates emergency porch pantry for neighbors after seeing need (abc15.com) — A Phoenix renter near 22nd Avenue and Jefferson has turned her small porch into an emergency pantry so nearby neighbors can pick up free snacks, clothes, hygiene items, and water. Responding to SNAP cuts and rising living costs, she's helping dozens of people daily and welcomes donations, emphasizing that anyone can suddenly find themselves struggling to afford basics.

City of Phoenix designated a Certified Autism Center (ktar.com) — Phoenix has become the largest U.S. city designated a Certified Autism Center, after training more than 80% of front-facing employees to better support autistic and sensory-sensitive residents. City leaders say the effort, led by Councilwoman Debra Stark, also includes improved accessibility standards, navigation for low-vision users, and upgraded hearing technology in council chambers.
   

4. Phoenix family says call for help during mental health crisis ended in deadly police shooting (azfamily.com) — A Phoenix mother says a 911 call for help during her son's mental health crisis ended with him being fatally shot by Phoenix police near 19th and Peoria avenues. Officers say he advanced with a knife after a Taser failed, while relatives and a witness dispute that he charged. The incident is under active investigation, with body camera video promised within two weeks.
