OAKLAND, CA — A weekend stabbing at Oakland's Wilma Chan Highland Hospital left a visitor and security guard injured and landed a 35-year-old man in jail.

At about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, the suspect allegedly stabbed a man in the hospital's emergency department lobby, according to a spokesperson for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

"It is unknown how the edged weapon made it into the lobby," Sgt. Roberto Morales said in an email Thursday.
A hospital security guard quickly jumped in to help, followed shortly by a sheriff's deputy.

The hospital visitor who Atkinson Rodgers allegedly stabbed was in stable condition, according to Morales.

"Although incidents of this nature are uncommon, the safety of the public and those who provide critical medical services remains a priority," Morales said. "The Alameda County Sheriff's Office will continue to work collaboratively with our Alameda Health System partners to respond to incidents and support safety at the facility."

No possible motive for the attack was released.
