Ex-Student Threatened Official At Bay Area High School, Made Video With Rifle, Prosecutors Say

OAKLAND, CA — An 18-year-old is facing criminal charges after authorities uncovered threats made against his former high school in Oakland, prosecutors said.

Oakland Unified School District officials reported Mercury Hayes, 18, to police after he made threats against a school official at Latitude High School, Alameda County prosecutors said.

It's unclear exactly what the threats to the school official were. Prosecutors say one of the threats, however, included a video where the teen showed what appeared to be an assault rifle with high-capacity magazines.

On Thursday, prosecutors announced they had filed criminal threat charges against Hayes. The 18-year-old is due in court on Friday for arraignment, authorities said.
