📰 News we're reading

• California tightens rules regarding how homeowners protect homes from wildfires (kyma.com) — New state wildfire rules will directly change how Altadena homeowners maintain their properties, requiring a debris-free, ember-resistant "Zone Zero" within five feet of homes in high-risk areas over the next three years. After losing multiple properties in the Eaton Fire, one Altadena family and local fire officials say clearing mulch, wood, plants, and roof debris could make homes far easier to defend.

• Severe Gaps in Protections for Altadena Wildfire Recovery Workers (ucla.edu) — Altadena's Eaton Fire recovery workers—many of them local day laborers—faced hazardous conditions, income loss, and immigration enforcement while helping clear debris and rebuild after the 2025 blaze. A new UCLA policy brief urges stronger safety rules, income stabilization, mental health support, and formal partnerships with trusted community groups to better protect these workers in future Altadena-area disasters.

• CA Senate issues its own utility wildfire proposal, sets up late negotiations (fresnobee.com) — Altadena residents who survived the 2025 Eaton Fire are at the center of a fierce Capitol fight over who pays for utility-caused wildfire damage. As lawmakers debate competing plans from the governor, Assembly, and Senate, local survivors and Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez are pushing to preserve compensation rights and prevent what they call a bailout for Southern California Edison and other utilities.
