Altadena Residents: Free Sandbags Available for Ahead of Storm Season (southpasadenan.com) — Altadena residents can pick up free sandbags now as Los Angeles County prepares for the 2026–27 storm season, with a self-service site at the Mountain View Street yard in town. Households in the Eaton and Palisades areas can get up to 25 filled bags, with extra staffing two days before forecasted rain to help residents protect their homes and property.
   

2. Caltech Research Buttresses New Law to Address Lead Contamination after Wildfires (caltech.edu) — Altadena just hosted Governor Gavin Newsom as he signed new wildfire bills inspired by Eaton Fire damage, including AB 1642, which sets the nation's first standards for testing and cleaning lead and other toxins inside burned-area homes. Caltech geochemist and Eaton Fire survivor Francois Tissot's research on contamination in standing Altadena houses directly shaped the law, aiming to make re-occupancy safer for future fire-hit communities.
   

3. Rebuilding Eaton Canyon Nature Center: LA County seeking donations to plug cost gap (pasadenastarnews.com) — Plans to rebuild the Eaton Canyon Nature Center just next to Altadena are moving forward, but Los Angeles County still needs about half of the $32 million cost. With state funds secured and new fire-resilient designs unveiled, officials are turning to private donations and community support to restore this heavily used gateway to nature for Altadena and surrounding neighborhoods.
   

4. Eaton Fire Smoke Toxins Cleared in Six Days: Study (developmentstoday.com) — Residents in Altadena and nearby communities get some reassurance from a new UCLA study showing that toxic metals released by the January 2025 Eaton Fire spiked sharply but fell back to normal within six days. Researchers tracked smoke from the hills above Altadena across the Los Angeles basin, finding serious short-term exposure but no evidence of lingering airborne contamination in the following months.
