1. Chico's Entertainment Zones on pause until fall (fresnobee.com) — Chico's new Entertainment Zone ordinance is technically in effect, but the city says the zones themselves won't actually launch until fall while signs, management plans, and special wristbands and cups are finalized. Businesses and residents should expect more details, including an official start date, once the city finishes this groundwork. For now, nothing changes yet in Chico's nightlife areas.
   

2. Enrollment Forum (csuchico.edu) — Chico State's Enrollment Management team is hosting a Fall 2026 Enrollment Forum on campus and via Zoom on October 19, offering a deep dive into current enrollment trends and first-year outcomes. Local students, staff, and community partners can hear updates on graduate enrollment, financial aid strategy, and international student issues, with time to connect directly with campus leaders.
   

3. One trash bag out of many (chicosol.org) — A Chico-based journalist reflects on finally joining volunteers at the Butte Environmental Council's Bidwell Park and Chico Creeks Cleanup instead of just covering it from the sidelines. Their day hauling trash along Lindo Channel and Chico Creek becomes a personal story about finding community, highlighting how many local residents quietly care for parks and waterways year-round.
   

4. Assistant Professor of Sport & Exercise Psychology, Social Scientist (csuchico.edu) — California State University, Chico's Kinesiology Department is recruiting a tenure-track assistant professor in sport and exercise psychology starting August 2027, a role that will shape both undergraduate and graduate programs. Qualified candidates with strong teaching and research records in sport psychology or related social sciences are encouraged to apply through the CSU Careers system.
   

5. El Niño could usher Central Valley floods. One strategy: let it flood like it used to (sacbee.com) — A strengthening El Niño could bring a very wet winter to the Sacramento Valley, raising flood risks for communities near Chico as rivers and bypasses run high. The story explains how projects like setback levees and restored floodplains near Hamilton City and Sutter County aim to give rivers more room, protecting towns while improving habitat.
