📰 News we're reading

1. Chico's open container zone delayed despite ordinance taking effect (actionnewsnow.com) — Chico's new open-container entertainment zone is officially legal, but you still can't carry drinks outside downtown bars until the city finishes signage, special cups, and wristbands in the coming weeks. Local businesses and Chico State students are preparing for the launch, which officials say should boost downtown and Meriam Park while requiring staff training on the zone's rules.

2. South Park Drive reopens in Chico after major road work (actionnewsnow.com) — South Park Drive in Chico has reopened after a major rehabilitation project that rebuilt the roadway, added new asphalt, fencing, and fresh striping. Some work and intermittent closures will continue under temporary traffic control, so drivers, cyclists, and park visitors should use caution and obey posted park hours while crews finish gates and permanent signage.

3. Little Chico Creek Elementary unveils new TK, kindergarten classrooms, track (krcrtv.com) — Little Chico Creek Elementary in Chico just opened three new Transitional Kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms plus a safer, fenced playground and restrooms for its youngest students. Funded by Measure K bond money and community donations, the project also added a new running track unveiled during the school's Jog-A-Thon, expanding space as Chico Unified grows its TK program.

4. Chico State police chief finalists: Bryce Davison (theorion.com) — Chico State is down to its final candidate for university police chief, longtime campus officer and current lieutenant Bryce Davison. He's pitching more community-focused policing, from on-foot and bike patrols to safety surveys and midnight strolls to spot dark areas, while encouraging students to use late-night shuttle services to stay safe around campus.

5. How photography made Chico artist Julianna Rose Moreno whole (mynspr.org) — A self-taught Chico photographer, Julianna Rose Moreno, describes how bringing her camera to local markets and punk shows helped her overcome social anxiety and feel more complete. By experimenting with bold, colorful images and candid crowd shots, she's built a reputation in Chico's arts scene and found a supportive creative community that encourages collaboration and personal growth.
