96-Year-Old Danville Artist Opening His Studio To The Public
Josef Twirbutt, whose installations have exhibited across the world, will open up his studio as part of the Tri-Valley Artist Studio Tour.

DANVILLE, CA — 96 years is a long time to get good at something, and Josef Twirbutt has certainly made the most of that time.
The 96-year-old Danville resident is an artist whose work is exhibited all over the world, including the Mexico City Museum of Modern Art, the New York University Art Collection, U.S. embassies, IBM headquarters, and the New York City Police Department headquarters. His newest exhibition will be at his home in Danville for Tri-Valley Artist Studio Tour, when 80 artists across the region open up their studios to the public.
Twirbutt specializes in turning discarded objects into rich and detailed compositions and installations. He was born in Poland, and lived for a while in Paris, where he worked for the chief architect of the Historic Architecture Monuments of France.

In 1958, he settled in New York City, where he worked as an architect. He helped design the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, American embassies in various countries, Hilton hotels, and more. While working as an architect, he began making art out of wood he found discarded on city streets. He continues working with wood to this day, and visitors at the studio tour will be able to see the rich and colorful art he created out of reclaimed wood.
“Wood offers an infinite array of grains, shapes, colors and textures,” he said in a statement shared with Patch. “I want my work to spark a connection with the natural world, especially in a time when it’s easy to overlook the beauty around us.”
